Program: The Four Seasons in the Janoška Style

The world-class ensemble, consisting of four exceptional musicians – František Janoška (piano), Roman Janoška (violin), Ondrej Janoška (violin), and Julius Darvas (double bass) – presents their fourth album: Antonio Vivaldi’s Four Seasons in the Janoška Style. The four violin concertos, collectively known as Le quattro stagioni, seemed an obvious choice for recording, especially in the year marking three centuries since the creation of this famous work, whose origins and significance carry a much deeper artistic and historical weight than may appear at first glance. Vivaldi’s complete cycle is titled Il cimento dell’armonia e dell’inventione (The Contest Between Harmony and Invention). It was published in Amsterdam in 1725 as Opus 8 and contains twelve violin concertos with string orchestra and basso continuo.
Although initially it might have seemed a charming yet risky idea, the Janoška Ensemble’s decision to present this work in their own authentic style has proven to be an exceptionally successful endeavor, deserving a special place in the interpretive tradition of this masterpiece.
On one hand, we have a three-century-old work of art; on the other, four 21st-century musicians who have created their own genre – the Janoška Style. One of the key features of this style is the art of improvisation, once obligatory but now nearly forgotten in classical string education. When Ondrej, Roman, František, and Julius engage in a dialogue with the musical and programmatic content of The Four Seasons, their exceptional skill, innate musicality, and deep respect for Vivaldi come to the fore, conveying his ideas in an incredibly vivid and expressive manner.
Their profound understanding of Vivaldi’s world, combined with imaginative interpretation and virtuosic precision, offers a refreshed reading of The Four Seasons – inviting the audience in Novi Sad to mark the end of the year with this extraordinary musical experience and immerse themselves in a festive atmosphere, enriched by the synergy of supreme artistry and passion for music.
